About the Grant

To promote research in pathology to fund short projects for early career clinical acadmic research trainee pathologists for a periods of 3,6,9,12 months. The bursary will provide the applicant's salary and/or research expenses up to a maximum of £40,000.00

Who is eligible

Trainee members of the Society, based in Great Britain or Ireland, in a recognised Specialist Trainee 1-5 post in Histopathology

The Jean Shanks/Pathological Society (JSPS) Clinical PhD Fellowship

About the Grant

To provide 3 years of PhD funding for clinical trainee histopathologists to increase the research skills, abilities and interests of those medically qualified trainee histopathologists working on tissue-based research projects in pathology. The funding covers the trainee’s salary, university fees and consumables budget of £15,000 per year for 3 years.

Trainee members of the Society, based in Great Britain or Ireland, in a recognised Specialist Trainee 1-6 post in Histopathology or other tissue specialty within pathology

The Jean Shanks/Pathological Society (JSPS) Clinical Lecturer Support Grant

About the Grant

To offer support for continuing research projects over a 2 year period by academic trainee histopathologists following the award of a PhD or MD, when progressing through the final stages of histopatholgical training leading up to the award of CCT. 

£50,000 per annum funding over a 2 year period, to be used flexibly to fund the costs of employing a research technician or assistant and associated consumable costs.

Who is eligible

Trainee members of the Society for at least 2 years who have completed a PhD or MD usually within the preceeding 5 years and be in a recognised Specialist trainee (normally ST3 and above) histopathology programme accredited for the award of a CCT in histopathology in Great Britain & Ireland

The Jean Shanks/Pathological Society (JSPS) Clinical Lecturer Grant

About the Grant

To offer histopathology trainees post PhD/MD who wish to continue research part-time whilst completing clinical training (part-time)

The grant provides up to £200,000 over a maximum of 4 years and is intended to cover 50% of salary costs (with 50% of salary provided by the NHS – similar to NIHR Clinical Lectureships) and provides up to £15K consumables per year

Who is eligible

Trainee members of the Society, based in Great Britain or Ireland, in a recognised Specialist Trainee in Histopathology or Dental / Oral Pathology (post FRCPath part 1 or within 6 months of taking the exam). Applicants should have been a member of the Society for at least 12 months.

The Jean Shanks/Pathological Society (JSPS) Intermediate Research Fellowship

About the Grant

To support newly accredited pathologists during the period between completing their training (passing FRCPath part 2/completing the Certificate of Completion of Training) and obtaining full funding for a Clinician Scientist post through MRC, Wellcome, CRUK etc.

The grant provides up to £100,000 over a maximum of 2 years, and is intended to cover 50% of salary costs (with 50% of salary provided by the NHS) and up to £15K consumables per year.

Who is eligible

Applicants must have a PhD/MD and have completed clinical training at the time of taking up the award in either Histopathology or Dental / Oral Pathology. Applicants should have been a member of the Society for at least 12 months.
